My starting point in defending any client accused of criminal conduct is for me to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the prosecution's case, for me to make a determination of whether or not the prosecution can prove beyond a reasonable doubt each and every element of the charged offense to a jury. You're not guilty unless you plead guilty or unless a jury concludes that you're guilty. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt - that means that there's no other explanation for the evidence except that which points to your guilt.
If at the close of a jury trial the state of the evidence is such that there are two interpretations of the evidence both of which are based in reason, one of which points to your guilt and the other of which points to your innocence, a jury is legally obligated to adopt the interpretation favoring innocence and reject the interpretation favoring a conviction.
